Ippudo Ramen

I've heard so many things about Ippudo... mainly that it's out of this world and worth the hour plus wait. I can accept lining up for over an hour for pancakes at Clinton Street Baking Company or pizza at Lucali, but for ramen? Couldn't convince myself to do it. So instead, as soon as I found out we had a half day at work on December 30th, I arranged to meet my sister at the restaurant before it opened for dinner service at 5pm.

When I arrived at 4:40pm, there were already 15 people in line.

The line behind me. True dedication.

The nice couple I chatted with during my 20 minute wait.

Hirata buns with pork. Made the 20 minute wait in the freezing temperature worth it. The most tender pork ever, combined with sweet and spicy mayonnaise/sauce and a piece of lettuce.

Miso ramen. I was really disappointed in this. I honestly was excited for this bowl of ramen to change my life or be simply fabulous, but instead I found it kind of bland and boring. Think in the future I'll just stop by and get pork buns to go?

My sister's karaka miso ramen. Spicy so there was some taste, but still blah.

Don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. Really wasn't too keen on the $13 to $14 ramen. I miss the delicious $6 ramen at Sogo in Hong Kong. Another thing I wasn't too fond of at the restaurant was the fact that each time people were taken to their seats, all the servers and chefs yelled out greetings. It really got kind of annoying after a while. I mean I'm all for an exciting/熱鬧 atmosphere, but it got so distracting, hearing random mumbled yelling every few minutes. The one saving grace of this visit was the pork buns.

  1. what a bummer! i have not tried ippudo either, but LOVE ramen, so it is on my list. I have heard ramen totto in midtown is supposed to be great!

  2. I really want to try totto ramen too! Although my friend brought me to a deliciousss (and relatively cheap!) ramen place on Saturday-- Men kui tei on 56th and 6th! Must try!
