A Truly Forgettable Brunch at Elephant & Castle

I'm finally making more of an effort to venture out to restaurants I've never been to. If it were up to me, I'd happily stick to the places I know and love, but alas, it'd be boring for all if my blog entries were something like "Mermaid Inn Revisited" over and over again...
Last weekend I spent a decent chunk of time searching for brunch places with a great eggs benedict on Yelp. Elephant & Castle has great reviews, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

My friend and I arrived at 11:00am on Saturday morning and we were seated right away (being an early-riser really does pay off in this city).

Chewy, cold bread. At least a day-old, perhaps?

Eggs Benedict on Potato Pancakes $10.50. One of the Elephant & Castle's most popular brunch dishes. We were both surprised. I really can't name one thing special about it. Instead of an english muffin under the ham and egg, there was a hash brown/ potato hybrid. Yes, that doesn't happen often, but it didn't exactly enhance the dish a whole lot. The hollandaise sauce also lacked flavor. There was one piece of broccoli on the side. That was a bit strange, too. Although I don't like it when there's no side with an eggs benedict, I can understand that, but to instead put one piece of broccoli? C'mon now...

Roasted Portobello Mushroom with Mozzarella, Tomato, Arugula, and Basil Mayo $9.50. All the toasted bread for sandwiches are toasted twice. I'm not sure why the bread is toasted twice, but the result was that it was so hard that I thought my teeth were going to chip off.

We were both so disappointed with this brunch. After we walked out of the restaurant I asked my friend what she thought of it and she said "unmemorable". That pretty much sums it up.
