Birthday Lunch at Jean Georges

Last Saturday we celebrated my sister's birthday at Jean Georges. It was my second time at the restaurant and it was as spectacular as my first experience there in January. I can't stress enough how wonderful this meal was. The service, the value, the tastes, and the ambiance. It's no surprise it was awarded three Michelin stars. If I could only spend one day in New York, I would insist on eating here for lunch.

The prix fixe lunch was $32 for 2 courses, but on September 6 it will increase to $38.

The elegant dining room has windows on three sides.

Shortly after we ordered, the amuse bouche was brought to our table. A hot miso soup with organic popcorn; watermelon with roquefort (the watermelon was so sweet and went beautifully with the strong cheese); and cucumber.

For the first course:

Foie Gras Terrine, Slow-Roasted Strawberries, and 25 year old Balsamic Vinegar. ($5 supplement). This dish was incredible. There was a thin and crispy layer on the top of the foie gras, and with each bite you could taste the sweetness of the strawberries.

Parmesan Risotto with Mushroom and Herbs. A lovely risotto with strong parmesan flavors and a good ratio of mushrooms to risotto.

For the second course:

Parmesan Crusted Confit Leg of Chicken, Artichoke, Basil and Lemon Butter. The crunch from the parmesan crust highlighted just how tender the chicken was, and the lemon butter brought a satisfying richness to the dish.

Caramelized Beef Tenderloin, Goldbar Squash with Parmesan Cheese and Buttery Hot Sauce. The beef was absolutely divine. This plate (well, along with the chicken and foie gras) captured my full attention. The hot sauce was an unexpected addition to the beef and made it even more enjoyable.

At the end of the meal, chocolates, lavender macarons and homemade marshmallows were brought to the table.

We were too full to order dessert at this point, but since I'd told the restaurant ahead of time that we were celebrating a birthday, the server brought us this plate of chocolate covered orange peels! A lovely little surprise.
