De Santos in the West Village

Located in the West Village between Greenwich & 7th Aves, De Santos could easily be missed by those unaware of the restaurant, but after 4 years, it seems to be quite a popular destination for cocktails and comfort food. The restaurant was buzzing by 7:30 on a Thursday night.

De Santos has a lot going on. The restaurant offers live music performances, an all-you-can-drink brunch on the weekends, and even projects movies on the outdoor patio wall once a week.

The meal was complimentary, but prices are included for reference.





Cucumber Martini, $14: Perfectly concocted-- strong and refreshing. 


Tuna Tartare with avocado & soy ginger vinaigrette, $16: The soy sauce in this appetizer made the tuna a little too salty. Although the tuna tasted quite fresh, the soy ginger sauce was too overwhelming to actually enjoy it. 



Beef Carpaccio with potato gnocchi and truffle cream, $16: A slightly strange but great combination of simple slices of beef and rich, comforting gnocchi.


Truffle Macaroni & Cheese, $14: Such a creamy and lovely mac 'n cheese dish topped with breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs didn't have much flavor, but the crunchy texture mixed well with the soft macaroni.  



Scallops & Mushroom Risotto: Outstanding scallops that were firm and bursting with natural flavor. The risotto was nicely al dente, but I couldn't really taste the mushroom. 




Chocolate Lava Cake with vanilla ice cream, $10: I really liked that there was enough ice cream to match the size of the cake, but for being a lava cake, the chocolate insides definitely did not flow as smoothly and easily as it should have.




Crepes with almond ice cream, $8: Decent crepes, but I personally prefer either plain crepes with no sauce or sides, or crepes filled with fruit. These crepes were smeared with chocolate inside, and accompanied by ice cream. Good, but not great.




Bananas Foster with cinnamon ice cream, $9: Warm, soft and syrupy, this dessert was my favorite out of the three.

Pros:
  • The server was very helpful with cocktail and wine suggestions to pair with the dishes. 
  • The cocktails. The restaurant has a mixologist and very nice offering of cocktails. I really enjoyed my cucumber martini and ginge cocktail (peach vodka, homemade ginger syrup, lemon & soda).
  • Amazing scallops and truffle macaroni and cheese.
  • A lovely romantic restaurant with plenty of candles and cozy lighting.
Cons:
  • Most of the dishes were just average.
