Long Island Wine Tasting: Sparkling Pointe and Macari Vineyards

Long Island in the summer often brings beaches and the Hamptons to mind, but wine tasting out there is a very nice and relaxing activity as well.

After our lovely lunch at Noah's, my aunt had two places in mind that she wanted us to check out: Sparkling Pointe and Macari Vineyards. Both turned out to be wonderful experiences.

Sparkling Pointe was quite busy when we arrived at around 2:30 or 3pm on Saturday, but we easily found a table. Our server was very friendly and spent a good amount of time explaining the process of how the winery produces its sparkling wines.

The grapes so neatly tied together. Even after many visits to vineyards in Napa Valley, I'd never gotten this close to the grapes.

We opted to sit under the shade at the corner table on the very left of this picture. 

Unlike at my beloved Frog's Leap Winery in Napa Valley, Sparkling Pointe pours each tasting wine after you're done with the previous round. That was beneficial because we were able to remember exactly what we were drinking. My uncle, sister, and bf chose the grand tasting flight ($17 each), which featured a selection of 4 sparkling wines. 

I ordered two separate tastings of the NV Cuvee Carnaval Blanc ($4), and NV Cuvee Carnaval Rouge ($4). The carnaval blanc is 100% chardonnay, and was very light, with flavors of lemon zest and notes of green apple. A perfect summer wine. The carnaval rouge is actually a blend of merlot (66%) and chardonnay (34%). It was so unique, with strong flavors and a great fizz at the end of each sip. My aunt and I liked this sparkling red so much that we bought bottles to bring home ($29).  

Almost all the snacks served at Sparkling Pointe are sourced from around New York, whether it be a fig and onion spread from Brooklyn, or parmesan crisps from Syosset, it's a great opportunity to try "local" goods.

Hudson Valley Camembert and Crackers, $13. Smooth, buttery, and a creamier version of brie, this camembert was a delightful pairing for the sparkling wines. The crackers were very light and crispy too. My uncle didn't favor the creaminess of the cheese, and opted to munch on the plain crackers instead.

Macari Vineyards was much smaller, with around 6 or 7 tables on the porch, and no servers. Tastings are done inside the shop, and if you'd like, you can then bring the purchased wine/snacks outside to enjoy. There was only 1 person working behind the counter when we were there, so it was definitely a challenge to get his attention. He was serving quite a few people at the same time, and seemed a little overwhelmed. We were sad to hear that they were out of Manchego, but went for the Prosciutto instead. It was delicious, but I did find it a bit strange that we were just handed the actual packet pulled straight out of the fridge.

Prices at Macari are lower than at Sparkling Pointe. Bottles were around $14-$20+. We ordered one bottle of 2008 Macari merlot, and one bottle of 2011 Macari chardonnay.

We were lucky to arrive just as a big bachelorette party group was leaving, so we had most of the porch to ourselves. Macari felt a little more rustic than Sparkling Pointe, but it was very enjoyable (once we finally flagged down the server behind the bar and put in our order) as well.
