Madrid: Churros at Chocolateria San Gines

Is there ever a better snack than churros? Didn't think so. On our second day in Madrid, I was excited to find that churros and hot chocolate (or churros con chocolate) make for a typical breakfast and late night snack in the city. We set out for an early breakfast at the 24-hour cafe Chocolateria San Gines.

The bright cafe is in a little alley surrounded by great shopping close to the Puerta de Sol. Although the cafe first opened in 1894, it's definitely well-maintained, with fresh paint on the doors and interior walls, and modern marble tables.

Pretty spacious seating area.

Being able to mass produce churros like this would be so great for parties at home.

Wonderfully hot churros dipped in dark chocolate. The best breakfast of the trip.

The cafe mainly serves churros and chocolate, as well as coffee and other desserts.
